Farm + City Connections

My life is so humorous at times. It is such a dichotomy due to the fact I lived in Houston, Texas for 50 years and still have many, many connections with friends and family from the world of education and NASA, but now I live on a farm and raise pigs, cows, goats, and chickens in the middle of Central Texas! Not to mention the fact that our son is constantly traveling all over the world…currently in Svalbard, Norway….and our oldest daughter lives in Harlem in New York City, NY while our youngest daughter finishes up her degree at Texas A&M University (Whoop!) to be an elementary school teacher! Our life affords lots of interesting conversations and opportunities.

Yesterday, I was sitting in the house toggling between a series of text messages, emails, and Facebook messages with three different people from three very different parts of our world. One conversation was about a pig that a customer bought who the vet is insisting was castrated. We have never castrated one of our piglets and I am telling her that, yes, I am 100% sure we didn’t castrate the pig!! I explained to her that, for her to pick out a male and a female from us, we had to be able to tell they were male and female by looking at their back ends!! We have never not been able to determine the gender of one of our piglets. At the same time, I was texting someone about a possible job opening for her son at my husband’s hospital while the third conversation was simultaneously taking place with my daughter in NYC about the classes she is currently teaching and the possible places she can stay when she is in Texas for a wedding this summer. In the conversation with our pig customer, I am literally suggesting the possibility of the pig’s testicles freezing off during the Texas Icepocalypse that happened in January of 2023 because I cannot think of another way this pig could be castrated! We don’t even own castrating equipment and have only taken one pig to get castrated by the vet about six years ago and we still own him. (Have I mentioned I have always been a REALLY creative thinker and problem solver! lol!)

As I am toggling between the emails, texts, and messages with all three people, I just keep laughing to myself and thinking HOW TERRIBLY WRONG this conversation could go if I send a response to the wrong person.

This is my life, people. I just have to laugh at the fact I am friends with such a diverse group of people in this world and that God knew this ahead of time and gave me the communication skills and personality set to toggle between all the things He brings my way. He created me to be a daughter, a sister, a student, a friend, a wife, a mother, a teacher, a farmer, an animal breeder, a business owner, and a writer. He knew I would need to juggle a lot and I’m glad he gave me the ability to laugh at myself at times. Thank you, God, for all of the ways you bring us together in today’s busy world, but man I wish there weren’t quite so many different avenues where we can be reached at times!! I’m sincerely hoping that I never have a really big mix up in my communication with people as I am toggling between all of the email and social media platforms! I could have a lot of explaining to do someday!
